However, thanks to dating apps such as Tinder, Bumble and Hinge, us normal folk have the opportunity to chat with people we may never meet in our everyday lives. Be it people who live further afield or people who move in completely different social circles to us.
But what happens when you’re a star and you’re looking for love? Well, it turns out that celebrities are just like us!
Dating app Raya is an exclusive dating app for public figures so that they can meet other equally famous people. But some celebs have been known to pop up on other apps in search of romance too.
Here are 10 celebrities who have joined dating apps in a bid to find love:
After splitting from her boyfriend Giovanni Perinice, 30-year-old Maura has been recently spotted on celebrity dating app Raya.
The pair ended their four month romance after Giovanni decided he wanted to focus his attention on his role as a professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing.
According to a Sun source the Longford woman has been inundated with “offers and swipes” on the app and won’t be single for long.
Back in May TikTok user Nivine Jay shared a personal video sent to her by actor Ben Affleck after the pair met on Raya.
“Thinking of the time I matched with Ben Affleck on Raya and thought it was fake so I unmatched him and he sent me a video on Instagram,” she captioned the video.
She then added the video that the 48-year-old Gone Girl star sent her on Instagram. “Nivine, why did you unmatch me?” he asked in the clip. “It’s me.”
The video emerged after Ben reunited with his ex-fiancée Jennifer Lopez.
Bennifer, who split in 2003 after a two year relationship, rekindled their romance earlier this year and have been spotted since enjoying many dates together.
Friends actor Matthew Perry was also spotted on Raya. The 52-year-old was blasted for matching with a 19-year-old model on the dating app. Kate Haralson, who was inspired by Nivine’s Ben Affleck video, shared a snippet on TikTok of a FaceTime call she had with the actor.
The L.A based personal assistant claimed she shared the footage to expose how older men in Hollywood were taking “advantage” of younger women on dating apps.
“A lot of people were saying I’m a bully and mean for posting this, and it made me feel kind of bad, but at the same time, I feel like a lot of guys in Hollywood are talking to all these young girls and it’s something that I think a lot of people should be aware of,” she said. Kate revealed that he even asked her: “Am I as old as your dad?”
Back in December 2019, actor Sharon Stone revealed that she had been locked out of dating app Bumble because users thought her account was fake.
Taking to Twitter, Sharon said: “I went on the @bumble dating [site] and they closed my account. Some users reported that it couldn’t possibly be me!. Hey @bumble, is being me exclusionary? Don’t shut me out of the hive!”
The 63-year-old revealed earlier this year that order had been restored as she was allowed access to her account again.
“I think that I said no to a couple of people that thought that it would be a nice way to be not-so-kind back,” she told Entertainment Tonight.
“I think some people don’t like to hear, ‘No, no I don’t want to go out with you.'”
In March, former The Saturdays singer Una Healy confessed that she had tried online dating too.
Speaking to The Sun she said: “It’s so hard. There’s no dating to be done right now. It’s the worst time to be single.”
“Going on an app, I tried that a few months ago and I just found it really pointless because you can’t meet people. You need to meet someone."
In September 2020 it was reported that she was chatting to actor Sam Claffin on Raya.
Una split from her husband Ben Foden in 2018 after he admitted to cheating on her. While he went on to marry Jackie Smith Foden. Una dated Limerick hurler David Breen for a year before they ultimately broke up.
Super star and former Disney actor Demi Lovato has also tried their hand at finding love online.
After splitting from long-term boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama in 2016, Demi revealed that they decided to join Raya.
The 29-year-old used the app while single, before deleting it in 2020 while in a relationship with Max Elrich. The pair got engaged in July after four months dating, before their relationship ended that September. Since then, Demi says that they have not been able to re-open their account.
“I just deleted it out of respect to the person I was with, then we broke up and I went to get back on [I couldn’t], and I was like, ‘You know what? It’s fine. I don’t need to be on this because I think I’m supposed to be alone right now,” they said.
When John Mayer joined celebrity dating app Raya, other stars quickly joined the site in hopes of matching with him.
Actor Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars) and singer Lizzo both got their hopes up they could match with the singer.
"John Mayer is on there [Raya], and I pressed yes for him, but I don't think he pressed yes for me,” she told Cosmopolitan.
Meanwhile Lizzo admitted that she only joined the site to get close to Mayer, but sadly the pair did not match.
John, who has a long list of celebrity exes including Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Jessica Simpson to name a few, was last reported to be dating writer Cazzie David.
Irish model Holly Carpenter recently succeeded in her endeavour to find love online.
The 29-year-old reportedly met boyfriend Jamie Hunt on a dating app during lockdown.
Holly, who previously starred on First Dates, has dated Irish stars such as Cian Healy, Richie Sadler and Danny O’Reilly.
Westmeath man Niall Horan was spotted on Raya back in 2018.
It came after the One Direction star split from his ex-girlfriend Hailee Steinfeld.
He is reportedly currently dating fashion-buyer Amelia Woolley.
Olympic gymnast Simone Biles has also found love online.
In early 2020, the 24-year-old matched with NFL player Jonathan Owens on Raya. While Owens did not know who Biles was at the time, their romance blossomed.
They began chatting and before they knew it, Jonathan was joining the Biles family on a family holiday.
The couple are still completely smitten with one another, with Simone recently sharing an adorable photograph to Instagram of the couple cosying up to each other.
