A Dancing with the Stars contestant has contracted Covid just days before the show’s return.

Love Island star Matthew MacNabb revealed that he has tested positive for Covid and confirmed that he won’t be attending the opening night on Sunday.

Taking on Instagram, the Down native - who won viewers over during the summer when he brutally ended things with fashion blogger Kaz Kamwi by simply declaring ‘We’re done’ - posted a video of himself exercising in his apartment.

“Covid positive. Home workouts it is,” he wrote to his 168,000 followers.

Confirming that he will be absent from Sunday evening’s show, Matthew replied to a fan and said: “Not ideal but I'm all good! I am but delayed by a week!”

A spokesperson for RTÉ said: “Matthew is now self-isolating following the latest government guidelines. While Matthew will not be taking part in Dancing with the Stars this weekend, protocols mean that all being well he will perform on show two.”

It comes after the first six couples taking part in the competition were revealed yesterday.

Twelve celebrity hopefuls and their professional dance partners will take to the floor to try to win the coveted glitterball trophy, with the remaining couples to be revealed today.

RTÉ broadcaster Aengus Mac Grianna and Emily Barker have been paired together, while Paralympic swimming champion Ellen joins Stephen Vincent for his second term as a DWTS professional.

Ireland's Rugby Sevens star Jordan Conroy and new dancer Salome Chachua are hoping to take home the trophy, but the competition is sure to heat up as Ronan Keating’s daughter Missy and her partner Ervinas Merfeldas are also going for the gold.

And Irish journalist Grainne Seoige will compete with her partner and former DWTS champion John Nolan against Olympian Nicolas Roche and Karen Byrne.

Presenters Jennifer Zamparelli and Nicky Byrne will be back to host the sparkliest show from this weekend, alongside judges Loraine Barry and Brian Redmond.

Dancing with the Stars returns Sunday, 9th January at 6.30pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
