Country music star Larissa Tormey has spoken of her shock and heartbreak after a popular Westmeath farmer died in a tractor accident - just days after starring in her latest video.

Bachelor Tom Lynam, from Kilbeggan, was pronounced dead at the scene of the single vehicle crash outside the town last Monday morning.

The previous week, 77-year-old Tom, who was well-known in horse racing and ploughing circles, filmed his first music video when he agreed to play the leading man alongside Larissa for her self-penned song, Old Fashioned.

"I had great fun doing the video last week with Tom, who was my neighbour, so you can imagine my shock when a friend phoned me on Monday morning to tell me that he was dead," Larissa tells the Sunday World.

"It feels like I'm in a different reality the way it all happened. Firstly, it was a surprise to everyone that Tom agreed to do the video. And you'd think he had a premonition of what was to come as he'd said to me, 'Well, I'm shy, but at least it will be a memory.'

"Now Tom will live on through that video, and it really captures the lovely man he was. I was going to cancel the release of the video on Friday, but Tom's family insisted I go ahead.

"Tom's sister, Mary, is like a mother to me. She said, 'We want the video to come out, and for Tom to be remembered like that.' He is so jolly and so full of fun in it."

The singer says her big regret is that Tom never got to see the video himself before he died. "I was looking forward to Tom seeing the finished video when it came out on Friday," she tells me.

Larissa, who is from Russia and lives in Kilbeggan with her Irish husband, beef farmer and butcher Christy Tormey, reveals that her song, Old Fashioned, is a tribute to "old-fashioned men, farming guys."

A former Sunday World Country Music Awards winner, she says: "I wrote the song about old-fashioned guys in the country because they are real, salt-of-the-earth people, and there are not many left anymore. They are just very real in a world where everything has become very false these days. What you see is what you get with those old country guys…Tom was like that.

"We filmed the video on our farm with the cattle around us and, even though he was completely out of his comfort zone, Tom really had fun, he enjoyed it. He was big into country music.

"He said, 'So what's the song about?' I said, 'It's called Old Fashioned,' and he said, 'Well it couldn't be any more old fashioned than myself.'

"In fact, Tom enjoyed the experience so much he agreed to do another one with me for another song. "

Larissa spoke about the many tributes that were paid to Tom at his funeral on Thursday. "Tom never married, but he lived a very full, active life in the Kilbeggan community," she says.

"He was such a great friend, and his death has left everyone heartbroken."
