KATHRYN Thomas has urged people to make last will and testament after she confirmed she recently made one herself and has it locked in her home safe.

The 42-year-old TV presenter is married to businessman Padraig McLoughlin and the couple have a three-year-old daughter, Ellie.

“We were chatting online one night, we have an online wellness community,” explained Kathryn on Ireland AM .

“We were having a chat, myself and some of the women, and a conversation about wills came up. I had never made a will.

“So I was asking them ‘what’s it like, how do you do it?’, and it's very simple.

“It’s something that I should have done three months after Ellie was born. It's something that you think about, but then you put it to the back of your mind.”

The Carlow woman admitted it’s “the last thing I want to think about today.”

But Kathryn, who also runs a fitness and wellness company, was determined to make clear what would happen to her assets in the event of her untimely death.

“So we took a couple of hours and talked through ‘what happens if’ - like planning for the future,” she recalls. “Getting everything boxed off and then signing it.

“So I would advise everybody to do it. Its one of those jobs we put off for so long.”

She pointed out on the Virgin Media show that not making a will can lead to problems in some circumstances.

“How many times have we heard of family issues where there wasn’t a will left or there were complications afterwards, so if it's down in black and white, shove it in the safe,” she stressed.

Last year, the popular presenter took her daughter Ellie on a road trip around Ireland for a TV series and this summer she hopes to bring along her husband too for a new season.

“Fingers crossed, plans are afoot,” she admitted. “We are 80 per cent there, but again, like everybody, we are waiting on Government restrictions. Because, most importantly, we've got to see places

“It looks like it might be the end of the summer. So we are hoping to get going in July.”

She added that Irish people are now enjoying staycations and appreciating the true beauty on their own doorstep, having been kept at home for the past year.

“I think the penny dropped for a lot of people last summer, when they discovered about maybe going back home,” she added.

“Even being from Carlow, I'd always go back to Carlow and sit with mom or whatever, but never actually get out and about around the county, the Blackstairs mountains, down the river Barrow.

“I think a lot of people discovered a lot about their own counties. “

She said a highlight of last year was her visit a remote part of Co Mayo.

“I think people were discovering so much more of Ireland and I think it will probably be the same this year as well,” she explained.

“There’s always somewhere to go. Depending on where you are, with covid and children. There’s always options to go somewhere a bit quieter, maybe looking at self-catering options as well

“When we were up in Mayo that time, the Cliffs of Moher was jammers, but the place where we were walking we didn’t meet a sinner for three hours.

“There’s always somewhere to go and if you do your research you can have a real get-away-from-it-all break.”

The star also said how much she enjoyed her time with Ellie on the road.

“It was just brilliant,” she beamed. “We were in the camper van going around. And she’s high up (on her child seat). She’s been waving at tractors and cows and all sorts. We just have great chats and just hung out.“
