Irish actor Niamh Walsh slams 'aggressive' catcallers after being harassed near home

The former Holby City star spoke about the incident in a series of tweets and said that it’s “exhausting” for women to be constantly harassed by strangers in the street.

She also shared her belief that men only catcall women who are by themselves as they are “vulnerable” targets.

Niamh, who is based in London, began her Twitter rant by saying: “Got aggressively catcalled 15 mins from my front door yesterday, and it got me thinking: this only ever happens when I’m walking alone. I think there’s something in that.

“If I’m with my mum, my mates, my partner, I’m a human being. Someone is there to see or hear you so it’s embarrassing, inappropriate.

“When I’m alone I’m just A Woman. So you can project whatever you want onto me. I am here for your entertainment and consumption. That’s f**king bullshit.

“And imagine how exhausting! To quite literally not be able to make it 15 mins from my door without some gobsh*te needing to make a noise about it so I’m aware of his presence.

“Trust me mate, I was aware. We are always aware. Women are already aware that just walking outside our front door is a sometimes fatal endeavour.

“So if you or your mates like calling out funny, cheeky, sexy things to women but only to women on their own, have a little think about why that might be, won’t you?

“If you wouldn’t do it if she was with someone, you like the fact that she’s alone. Because it makes her vulnerable. And that f**king sucks.”

Responding to Niamh’s Twitter thread, one follower said: “So sorry to hear that. This is a celebrity getting catcalled, in a so called ‘developed country.’

“Just depressing. Not because she's a celeb, but because with famous people, perpetrators are usually afraid of the circumstances. Imagine what women go through on a daily basis.”
