Irish singer Imelda May has revealed how it was rocker Ronnie Wood’s wife Sally who first introduced her to her boyfriend.

The Liberties legend is currently dating Niall McNamee, an actor and musician from Dundalk, in Co Louth.

Imelda (46) told Miriam O'Callaghan on RTE Radio One: “Aw he’s lovely, he’s gorgeous. It was Sally Wood, Ronnie’s wife, who introduced us.

“She was producing a play and he was the lead actor in it.

“He’s lovely, he’s so sweet and hilarious and talented. An Irishman in England, so he understands, he’s lovely.”

The Rolling Stones guitarist features on Imelda’s new record ‘11 past the hour’.

Imelda first met the veteran musician when she was just 16 as she sang in the basement of the iconic Dublin bar Bruxelles,

“He came in one night, jumped up on stage and we jammed, we played together, and it was fabulous we’d a great time,” Imelda recalled.

“Then years later I’d been on the road with Jeff Beck and Jeff said ‘I want to introduce you to Ronnie,’ and when we met I said, ‘We met before but I don’t think you’d remember,’ and he remembered everything.”

Imelda has previously admitted that she "didn't expect" her relationship with her younger boyfriend to last a year.

Speaking to the Sunday Independent, Imelda told how lockdown "flung" the loved-up couple together.

She said: "We hit it off and lockdown kind of flung us together.

"You either deal with that or you don't. We're in each other's bubble. We didn't really think it all through, we just didn't want to be alone.

"We didn't expect it to last a year but here we are. Who knows where things will go with anyone."

Imelda also insisted that the age gap between her and Niall doesn't matter, as finding love is "a blessing".

In January she described Niall as her "best friend" as she wished him a happy 27th birthday.

She said: "You can line things up as much as you want and follow the rules as much as you want. If two people fall in love, that's all there is and to have beauty in your life in any way, especially now, is a blessing."

She shared a black and white picture of Niall and said: "Happy Birthday to my kindhearted, hilarious, talented, witty, weird, charismatic, thoughtful, handsome as hell, best friend and boyfriend. Love you!"

While she was speaking to Miriam O’Callaghan on RTE Radio from her home in London, Imelda also told how hard it was for her to be away from her parents during the pandemic.

She said: “My mam had to go into hospital, she has dementia and it was really hard because we couldn’t visit her. And couldn’t explain to her what was happening.

“And we were just beside ourselves with her going into hospital and being afraid we wouldn’t see her again.

“And she caught Covid in hospital and recovered. She’s like Lazarus, she’s brilliant and she’s home now thank God.”

Due to restrictions, Imelda cannot get back to Ireland, but she hopes to move home properly when her daughter Violet is older.

Her ex-husband and Violet’s father, Darrel Higham, lives in the UK close to Imelda’s home.
