Imelda May gushes about musician boyfriend who's 20 years her junior
The pair first met through mutual friends in 2018
Imelda May has gushed about her musician boyfriend Niall McNamee on Angela Scanlon’s new chat show ‘Ask Me Anything.’
Speaking to the talk show host about her romance she said things are going great between the pair.
“It’s going really well, so far, touch wood. I’m normally really private, I’ve had relationships that nobody’s known about and they’ve come and gone.”
“And I normally keep things quiet but this one seems to have taken wings, gotten out there so that’s ok. So far so good. I take things in the moment.”
“He is a messer,” she added. “And he makes me laugh, he’s brilliant. And he makes me laugh a lot. We’re a good pair.”
The 47-year-old met her beau through mutual friends back in 2018 but things only got romantic in in during the Covid lockdown.
“We're in each other's bubble,” she told the Sunday Independent. “We didn't really think it all through, we just didn't want to be alone. We didn't expect it to last a year but here we are. Who knows where things will go with anyone."
Imelda, who lives in London was unable to visit her mother Madge in Dublin for almost a year. Her 94-year-old mother caught the deadly virus but recovered.
While Imelda lives in London, Madge lives in Dublin, and that meant she couldn’t visit her for almost a year. The singer thought she might never see her mam again but got home to visit at the end of last year.
Her boyfriend cheered her up by collecting her in the UK from the airport with a sign that read “my girlfriend who is fit”.
“On that occasion I’d just come back from Christmas, I came over - legally by the way, I was working, I’d work over here and I did my two weeks isolated, did the whole thing,” she said.
“But I wanted to see my mam, who I didn’t think I’d ever see again. I was in bits on the way back to the UK, I was in bits and he knew that so he decided to make me laugh, to cheer me up so that’s what he did,” she said.
“He’s a sweetheart, he’s an absolute sweetheart. I'm very lucky. He’s gorgeous,” she said
Niall, who is 27, was born in Leicester in 1994 to Irish parents.
Discussing their 20-year age-gap she said: "Ah, I was wondering when someone would mention that. You can line things up as much as you want and follow the rules as much as you want. If two people fall in love, that's all there is and to have beauty in your life in any way, especially now, is a blessing.”
When Niall was 18 he moved to London to pursue a career in music. He has played various roles in the West End such as Edward Heath in Tory Boyz and Neil McCormick in Chasing Bono.
Niall also starred as Irish singer Fran O’Toole from The Miami Showband, who was tragically killed alongside three of his bandmates in a UVF ambush in July 1975. He made his screen debut in The Foreigner with Pierce Brosnan and Jackie Chan in 2017.
Imelda and Niall played together gigs online during the Covid-19 lockdown, even going live on her Instagram on St. Patricks Day from her kitchen. The pair also wrote and released a song, ‘Don’t Let Me Stand On My Own’, together. Niall is currently working on his debut album.
Angela Scanlon’s Ask Me Anything airs on Saturday night on RTÉ One at 9:45pm.
