Hughie Maughan says second time on First Dates was great compared to 'monstrosity'

'My second appearance on First Dates was great compared to the monstrosity I was paired with last time' - Hughie Maughan

Big Brother star Hughie Maughan reveals it was "a relief to find someone decent" on his second appearance of First Dates after his initial "horrific experience".

When the former Big Brother star, who hails from Ballymun in Dublin, was paired with Scottish hairdresser Paul Smith on the TV show last year it led to a war of words between the couple.

Paul accused Hughie (27) of being "too short, camp, fake-looking and an attention seeker" while Hughie branded Paul "a plank" who had "the personality of a doorknob, one of the rudest people I've ever met and not as good looking as me".

He says: "I was paired this time around with a very nice English guy called Jason.

"It was a big difference to the guy I was paired with the last time. It was a really nice experience, because the last experience was horrific.

"I think I was so heartbroken around that time that I didn't realise how bad it was until afterwards. It was a really good experience the second time around."

Hughie had moved back to Dublin following a break-up in his relationship with Ryan Rutledge, whom he met on Big Brother.

"The first time the pandemic was really strong and I was going through a lot of heartbreak and it was really weird to be on a date. The guy was really rude as well and it ended up being a very weird experience, whereas this time it was better," he admits.

"He was a nice guy. I like English accents, I find them really sexy. Although I like all accents."

Hughie concedes he related a lot more to Jason.

"He understood my situation as I lived in England with my ex - that's why I moved over there.

"He had the same story but the other way around. He moved back to Ireland to be with his ex and he understood what it was like to up sticks and move around. So we related to each other in different ways."

This was the third time Hughie has appeared on a dating show, as last year he featured on Celebrity Pulling With My Parents.

"I normally go for personality, although looks of course do matter. But I don't really have a type," he says.

"I wanted to do it again because the first time I did it for various reasons. I like to date - the chance to get to meet a new one is lovely all the time. The reason I wanted to do the likes of First Dates is to show diversity in the Travelling community.

"It's nice to do stuff on TV that shows people a different side of me and I think people will really enjoy it and find it funny."

Hughie admits he uses dating apps like Grindr.

"My own picture is on it and lots of people ask me 'is this the real Hughie', many of them think it's a fake profile. I'd tell them 'why wouldn't it be me, I'm not Beyonce!'" he says.

"A lot of people on it are only after one thing. Some of them have girlfriends or boyfriends and want to cheat on them behind their back with me, which I've told them I'm not going to do. I don't want to be involved with cheaters."

Hughie is also famous for his surgical procedures and admits he may not be finished just yet.

"In less than three years I've had a hair transplant, my teeth twice, I've had liposuction - under my chin, my bladder area, my stomach, upper stomach, sides, upper and lower chest. I've had two bum lifts. I will continue to have lip fillers and Botox," he adds.

"I don't care if people criticise me for it. I know that I'm not really vain. I know that I'm changing things that I can change, why not if I can and I'm really happy with that."

First Dates is on RTÉ 2 on Thursday at 9.30pm.
