GABRIEL Byrne may be one of Hollywood’s biggest stars but the actor has revealed his guilty pleasure - Fair City.

“People might say ‘what?'. But I sit here in my office in Maine and find out what’s going on in Carrigstown!”

The 70-year-old Dubliner was himself a soap star on RTE before making in big in movies – he played charmer bachelor Pat Barry in The Riordans in 1978 and 1978, as well as in Bracken from 1980 until 1982.

The Dubliner lives on 50 acres of farmland in Maine on American’s east coast with his wife Hannah Beth King and their three-year-old daughter.

He has just released his memoir 'Walking With Ghosts' and tells the RTE Guide Christmas issue that he was “completely honest” with himself in it.

The tome deals with his past experience with alcoholism, sexual abuse and mental illness.

“Sometimes the pain of trauma is so deep that it is buried for life within the person,” he reflects.

“Sometimes we have to accept that in life there are events that don’t have a resolution.

"It takes a long time to get to that place, a lot of mistakes and pain to say ‘OK there’s nothing I can do about that, I accept it and I will live my life'.”

He is 23 years sober.

“There was a time it was minute by minute, hour by hour,” he admits.

“Not any more. Now it’s day by day. I never take anything like that for granted.”

Byrne, who also has two adult children, Jack Daniel (31) and Romy (28), adds that it’s unlikely he will ever return to live back in Ireland.

“The desire to return never leaves but the ability to actually uproot from the culture where you’ve made a home is very difficult,” he confirms.
