Grainne Seoige has said that she is “honoured” to be an ambassador for Darkness into Light this year.

The event, in aid of suicide prevention charity Pieta House, takes place every May.

People all over the world take part in the now worldwide event as thousands of people across Ireland will take to the street for a sunrise walk.

The walk begins in darkness at sunrise and continues through to dawn, symbolising the journey from despair to hope.

Speaking at the launch of this year’s event Grainne Seoige said: “This is the first year in a long time that I have been home in Ireland for Darkness Into Light, so I am honoured to be able to support and take part in person.”

The broadcaster who is fresh from the dancefloor following a stint on Dancing With The Stars recently moved home to Ireland from South Africa.

“Up to 200,000 people gathered around the globe in previous years to walk in solidarity with those experiencing dark times," she continued, "and this year we want to encourage people to get their groups together once again and sign up to make a real difference.”

Almost 100,000 calls & texts were made to Pieta House in 2021. In response, each month, the team at Pieta provides over 4,000 hours of suicide and self-harm crisis therapy. Each day, seven additional teenagers come to Pieta for one-to-one support.

The charity provide life-saving support services for those in suicidal distress and who have been bereaved through suicide.

The event will take place as the sun rises on Saturday May 7th, 2022.

A number of well-known faces from the worlds of sport, music and entertainment have come together with Grainne Seoige to launch the 2022 event, including musician Tolu Makay and former Dublin GAA player Philly McMahon.
