The love for lockdown global hit Normal People continues after the show was nominated for two Golden Globes.

The series, filmed in Sligo and Dublin and produced by Ireland’s Element Pictures, landed a nomination in the coveted Best Limited Series or TV Film category. British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones, who played Marianne in the series, was also nominated for Best Actress, Limited Series - but Maynooth actor Paul Mescal was a surprise omission in the Best Actor category.

The star, who is currently filming Carmen on location in Australia, was widely expected by pundits to be nominated.

Brendan Gleeson’s terrifying turn as Trump in mini-series The Comey Rule also landed him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries. Gleeson starred opposite Jeff Daniels in the show, based on the memoirs of former FBI director James Comey.

Kilkenny-based animation studios Cartoon Saloon and Wolfwalkers directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart also had plenty to celebrate after the film was shortlisted in the Best Animated Picture category. The Irish movie about a girl named Maeve who walks with wolves is also fancied for an Oscar run later this spring.

Normal People will be up against The Queen’s Gambit, Small Axe, The Undoing and Unorthodox when the awards take place on February 28th.

The Crown, Ozark and Schitt’s Creek were among the big TV series which scooped multiple nominations. Among the film categories, Mank, The Father, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman and The Trial of the Chicago 7 are the nominees in the Best Motion Picture: Drama.

Chadwick Boseman, who tragically died of cancer last year aged just 43, received a posthumous Best Actor nomination in the drama category for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
