From Kim Kardashian and Kanye West to Maura Higgins and Giovanni Pernice, here’s a look at the couples that didn’t last.
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello
Shawn Mendes (23) and Camila Cabello (24) announced that they had ended their relationship on November 17th after two years of dating.
The pop stars got together after collaborating on Camila’s chart-topping song ‘Senorita’ in 2019.
In a joint statement, they wrote: “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever.
“We started out relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”
Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid
After six years of on-off dating and the birth of their daughter Khai, former One Direction singer Zayn (28) called it quits with his model girlfriend Gigi (26) in late October.
News of their breakup emerged after TMZ reported that Gigi’s mother Yolanda was considering filing a police report against Zayn for striking her during an incident in September. He was later charged with four counts of harassment.
A source told People magazine: “It's been tough on all of them because they're all so close. That's her mom, but it's still her baby's father, even though their romantic relationship is over.”
Despite this, some eagled-eyed fans maintain that the pair are working through their issues and co-parenting their daughter, according to celebrity gossip site Deuxmoi.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
One of the biggest celebrity breakups of the year was Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s.
The former flames, who started dating in 2012 and got married in 2014, share joint custody of their four children – North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm.
Kim (40) filed for divorce at the beginning of this year after rumours emerged that there was trouble in paradise.
Speaking about the breakup at the Keeping Up With the Kardashians reunion special, she said: “I think it was just a general difference of opinions on a few things that led to this decision and in no way would I want someone to think I didn’t give it my all or not really try. I will forever be Kanye’s biggest fan.”
Kim seems to have moved on pretty quickly, as she’s been spotted out and about with comedian Pete Davidson (28) in recent weeks (even reportedly meeting his mom in his beloved Staten Island) after taking on Saturday Night Live hosting duties in October.
Pete Davidson and Phoebe Dynevor
Speaking of Pete Davidson, his short-lived romance with Bridgerton star Phoebe (26) ended not long after they made their first public appearance as a couple in July, when they cosied up to each other at Wimbledon.
The pair were fast becoming the year’s hottest celebrity couples, but reportedly decided to call things off due to their conflicting work schedules after just five months together.
A source told The Sun: “It was wild while it lasted and they both really care for each other. But the distance has put a strain on them.
“Their mates think they make a great couple but the distance has made it completely unworkable. They had fun and will remain close but unless something drastic changes their relationship won’t recover.”
Maura Higgins and Giovanni Pernice
Maura (30) revealed back in July that she was happily dating Strictly Come Dancing pro Giovanni (31) after breaking up with her fellow Love Islander Chris Taylor earlier this year.
The pair dated for four months before Giovanni reportedly ended things to focus his attention on his career.
And while Gio later addressed the split and assured fans that there was “no wrongdoing" by either party, an insider told The Sun that Maura felt “blindsided by the decision” because she thought Giovanni was “the one.”
Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez
In April, J Lo (52) and A-Rod (46) called off their engagement two years after the baseball player proposed to the singer in the Bahamas.
They announced that they were going their separate ways with a statement, saying: “We have realised we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so.
"We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and one another's children.
“Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have is to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.”
Since the split, J-Lo has rekindled her romance with ex-boyfriend Ben Affleck and the pair have been going strong ever since.
The couple, dubbed ‘Bennifer’ by fans, were engaged in the 2000s but went their separate ways until they reunited this year.
With an outpouring of PDA and paparazzi photos, Bennifer are undoubtedly the most exciting celebrity couple to come out of 2021.
