He had us on the edge of our seats playing a gangster in Kin, now Emmet J Scanlan is back on our screens next week on the other side of the law.

The Irish star, who played Jimmy Kinsella in the hit RTE drama, is police inspector Kieran Shaw in new ITV thriller The Tower.

The three-part drama follows a possible murder investigation after a veteran cop and a girl fall to their deaths from a tower\ block in London’s East End.

Left alive on the roof are a five-year-old boy and rookie police officer Lizzie Griffiths.

Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins, played by Game of Thrones star Gemma Whelan, arrives on the scene to investigate but traumatised Lizzie is unwilling to share any information.

Within hours, she has disappeared and Collins sets out to uncover the truth around the grisly deaths.

The investigation takes her into the dark heart of policing in London.

The thriller series is based on the first of Kate London’s Metropolitan series of novels, Post Mortem.

London was a Metropolitan police officer herself who, by the end of her career, worked on a Major Investigation Team on the Homicide and Serious Crime Command.

She has said how the people she met and the things she saw in the police inspired her to write almost as soon as she had first donned the uniform.

“Within a matter of weeks [of joining the police] I was writing - not for publication, but because I just had to get down on paper the world I encountered: its complexity, laughter, loyalty, the moral conflicts and the dangers that were not only physical," she said.

“Policing showed me London in a way no other job could. The product of this experience was my first novel, Post Mortem.”

That was in 2015 and her second book Death Massage was released in 2017 and a third, Gallowstree Lane, came out in 2020.

It’s not the first time that busy actor Scanlon has played a police officer – he also starred in hit thriller series The Fall.

He also appeared in Gangs of London, Peaky Blinders and was a regular in Hollyoaks.

He played opposite Paul Mescal in last year’s The Deceived in which he portrayed a university professor having an affair with one of his students.

Fans of Kin, which pulled in nearly 600,000 viewers for last Sunday’s big finale, hope that there will be a second series ordered.

The Tower runs over three nights from Monday on UTV at 9pm.
