Ed Sheeran recalls wild nights out in Dublin that left him with no voice

The crooner, who is in Dublin ahead of two gigs at Croke Park this weekend said that he was often left with no voice after sing-song sessions in the capital’s pub.

“When I first came to play in Dublin, I mean right up to the 3Arena in 2013, it’s the same with Australia…” he began telling Jim Jim and Nobby on FM104.

“I land in Ireland or Australia and I get so excited to be there that the first three days I’m there, I go on like a three day bender, and then by the first gig my voice is just gone.”

“I remember 2011 ,2012, 2013, whenever I’d come to Ireland my voice would be like wrecked.”

“Cos I'd basically go to a pub, have a sesh, do a sing-along in a pub for four hours and then the next day do the same thing and end up doing the show… so I’m being way more sensible this time.”

Ed also admitted that he has become more sensible since becoming a father to one-year-old Lyra, who he welcomed in August 2020 with wife Cherry Seaborn.

“I'm actually being way more sensible over the last two years being a dad.”

“You can't really be on point at 6 o’clock in the morning if you've been up ‘til 6 o’clock in the morning,” he said.

“There's not been a night where I've gone to bed after midnight in a really long time.”

Speaking about his upcoming shows in Dublin, Sheeran said he is honoured to play at the venue.

“Croker, it’s not A given to have concerts there, you have to put your name down well in advance,” he explained.

“I feel grateful to be able to do it this time it's a really really special venue for Ireland and I don't take that lightly i'm really excited.”

He was spotted socialising in a Dublin pub ahead the shows.

The Bad Habits singer stopped for a drink in Fitzgeralds of Sandycove in Dun Laoghaire on Monday night and even got to pour his own pint of Guinness behind the bar after enjoying a meal in local Indian restaurant Rasam.

One Twitter user shared a photo of Ed posing in the pub and laughed that it was typical that he would show up “the one night ya (sic) don't go for a glass in your local.”

The musician’s trip to Fitzgeralds came ahead of the first Irish gig of his tour in Whelan’s on Tuesday night, where lucky fans got up close and personal with the singer in the intimate venue.

He then played Vicar Street on Wednesday before an estimated 160,000 people are expected to take to Croke Park for Sheeran’s two stadium concerts this weekend.

Ed’s Mathematics tour will then move to Cork next week for two gigs in Páirc Uí Chaoimh before he plays two more gigs in Thomond Park, Limerick.

After that, the singer-songwriter will head north of the border for two gigs at Boucher Playing Fields, Belfast on May 12 and 13 before heading to Cardiff and travelling around Britain.

The tour will see Sheeran return to stadiums for the first time since his record-breaking Divide Tour which took place from 2017-2019.

It officially became the most-attended and highest-grossing tour ever by the time of its completion.
