RTÉ 2fm presenter Donncha O’Callaghan has apologised after accidentally saying ‘c**t’ live on air.

The retired rugby union player turned radio host made the blunder during his 2fm Breakfast show with Doireann Garrihy and Carl Mullan.

He had been delivering a news bulletin bout a Donegal pub that introduced a ‘swear jar’ for people who speak about Covid in-store when he mixed up his words, saying: “A pub in Donegal is imposing a €2 fine on any c**t – customer - that mentions the word Covid.”

Donncha didn’t let his slip up bother him too much and carried on with bulletin like a professional, but his co-hosts were left in stitches.

“I could think of other words that would warrant €2 in a jar. Do you know what I mean?” Doireann joked as she held in her laughter.

After a short break, Doireann revealed that a texter had said that Donncha’s blunder was sacrilegious as he began to issue an apology to listeners.

“I’d like to take this moment to apologise to our fantastic listeners,” he said as some dramatic music played in the background.

“I got tripped on a word and I was trying to mention customers – something else came out and I am really sorry for that... I rehearsed it about 50 times. Customers, customers, customers.

“But more than anything, I am more sorry for the behaviour of my two teammates who absolutely jumped into the gutter and had the most foul of thoughts.

“On behalf of the team here on 2fm, we’d like to apologise. We’ll leave it there. I’m sorry. I am sorry.”

But the Cork native’s co-hosts pretended that they were none the wiser, with Carl insisting that his giggles were a result of their producer falling off her chair.

He protested: “What? I was laughing at producer Grace who fell over her chair! I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Doireann admitted her mistake: “We went into the gutter, Carl. Own up. We lay down and we rolled around in it.

But Carl stood his ground, saying: “I absolutely did not. I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m going to have to listen back to even know what you’re talking about.”
