IRISH country superstar Daniel O'Donnell reveals how he was given the hilarious codename Tarzan after being chosen to perform on Strictly Come Dancing.

In an interview about his life and times on Sunday World's new podcast, My Country Life, the singer also recalls the embarrassing moment he arrived at London's Heathrow Airport to find a driver waiting for him with a sign saying 'Tarzan.'

Looking back on the 2015 show, Daniel says the offer to be a celebrity dancer on Strictly came around the time that his wife Majella had recovered from breast cancer and he'd taken a two-year break.

Strictly had been on Daniel's wish list of things to do. "It was a challenge; be careful what you wish for," he laughs.

"We love Strictly. I always watched it and still watch it. After Majella had her treatment finished we decided that I would take a break of up to two off from touring."

However, when Strictly came calling it was an offer he couldn't refuse.

"I met two producers in Ireland. You had to meet them nearly under cloak and dagger. You weren't allowed to tell anybody."

Before being revealed to the public, the names of the celebrity dancers were kept under wraps and each had given a pseudonym. Daniel's was Tarzan.

The entertainer admits that he was out of his comfort zone on Strictly.

"The funny thing about it is that I just love dancing...But Strictly was so difficult. But it was an amazing experience," he says.
