Daniel O'Donnell has shared the joy he felt at being reunited with his grandchildren Olivia and Archie after months of separation under the lockdown.

The Donegal singer posted a lovely picture of a day out at the beach with the pair of them and what looks like a family pet.

The country star and wife Majella endured the pain of separation that the whole country felt but now restrictions are lifting he has delighted in seeing them again.

Daniel told Karen Koster and Tommy Bowe on Ireland AM, “We saw our grandchildren for the first time in five months at the weekend. It was great to see them.

“So many people around the country are the same,” he said, “but we still have to be very careful, that's the thing we have to understand. It's important we move forward, but we have to move forward cautiously and that's the message we need to get out."

Olivia and Archie are the children of Majella's daughter Siobhan.

Daniel revealed how they used FaceTime and WhatsApp “to help us communicate” during the long months apart.

"Before lockdown, I would have been onto them nearly every day to send a message. We didn’t have the physical contact but we had technology to help us.

"They are small, Olivia is four and Archie is two, so I don’t think they are affected by it."

Daniel previously spoke about how being a grandfather “is the best thing ever”.

“ little Olivia is the light of our lives. I never dwelt on it before, but I never expected to feel the joy that she gives me – it is simply fantastic,” he stated.

“It goes for both of us as Majella would tell you the same thing."
