Hollywood stars Matt Damon and Robert Downey Jr. have been cast alongside Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer.

The film is a biopic of the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the founders of the Manhattan Project, who were involved in the creation of the atomic bomb.

With Cillian Murphy set to play the lead role in the film, Emily Blunt has been cast as his wife Katherine. Matt Damon will play Lieutenant General Leslie Groves, the director of the Manhattan Project.

Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr is cast as Lewis Strauss, the Atomic Energy Commissioner who played a key part in Oppenheimer’s security clearance being revoked.

Oppenheimer is based on the 2005 book American Prometheus: The Triumph And Tragedy Of J Robert Oppenheimer written by Kai Bird Martin J Sherwin.

The film was written by Christopher Nolan, who is also set to direct. His creative partner and wife, Emma Thomas is set to produce the biographical movie along with Charles Roven of Atlas Entertainment.

Universal have said that the film is and “epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.”

The production giants landed the final rights to the film after a battle with Sony and MGM. Production is set to begin in early 2022, with the film set to be released on July 21, 2023, a release slot favoured by Christopher Nolan.

It has also been reported that Nolan was promised a production budget of almost $100 million, total creative control, a 100-day theatrical window, and a six-week blackout period from the studio where by Universal cannot release another movie three weeks before or three weeks after the flick is released.

Oppenheimer is the first film since 2000 that Nolan has not made with Warner Brothers. Cillian Murphy previously worked with Christopher Nolan on Batman Begins, Dunkirk and Inception. This will be Matt Damon’s first time to work with the legendary director.

Matt Damon recently starred in The Last Duel alongside Jodie Comer and Adam Driver. The historical drama was filmed in Ireland during late 2020. It was initially due to film in March of the same year but the Covid-19 virus saw filming shut down with Damon stranded in Dalkey during the pandemic.
