no-brainer Actor Jamie Dornan: 'I didn't have the brains to be a doctor'

ACTOR Jamie Dornan has admitted he wasn't clever enough to follow in the footsteps of his gynaecologist father Jim.

The 38-year-old Fifty Shades of Grey star was asked by Entertainment Tonight Canada what he would be if he wasn't an actor.

"My father's a doctor and my mum was a nurse and my uncle, my aunty, my stepmother…I have a lot of doctors in my family," he said.

"But, put simply, I wasn't bright enough to become a doctor."

The actor, from Holywood, Co Down, plays a paramedic with Anthony Mackie in his latest film, Synchronic.

But he said this was something he could never do in real life.

"I mean, paramedics particularly, just seeing all that sort of stuff before anyone else does and having to act," he said.

"The enormity of those decisions they have to make in those pressurised moments. I mean that would be very far down my list (of careers).

"I don't think I have it in me to do that."

The New Orleans-based sci-fi film sees the stars play two emergency responders as they try to fight a new designer drug which allows users to travel through time.

"It's kind of a world that I have relatively limited interest in, sci-fi movies, to be honest," said Dornan.

"But I think what (directors and producers Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson) wanted to do is turn sci-fi on its head and make you think more broadly than you would in a normal sci-fi movie experience.

"It was a great package and I wanted to work with Mackie," he added.

"I nearly worked with him before and felt that was a missed opportunity, so a lot of things tied together. It was a no-brainer.

"I had also been to New Orleans before for like two nights, but I had been desperate to shoot something there."
