Dancing With the Stars professionals Kai Widdrington and Giulia Dotta have broken up after five years together.

The couple first began dating in spring 2016 and friends believed that they would eventually go on to get married and have children together.

Giulia’s rep confirmed the news of the split to The Mirror and said that the pair are still on good terms.

Fans believe that the dancers have fallen victim to the so-called “Strictly curse” after it was announced earlier this month that Kai would be joining the cast of Strictly Come Dancing.

Kai and Giulia’s doomed relationship is just one of many romantic breakdowns linked to the BBC reality series.

Other stars who have faced romantic strife after appearing on the show include Countdown’s Rachel Riley, model Daisy Lowe, actor Ricky Whittle, rugby union player Ben Cohen, and the late Caroline Flack.

It comes after it was revealed that Kai would be joining the line-up of professional dancers on Strictly alongside his flatmate – and Maura Higgins' new boyfriend – Giovanni Pernice.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast about his new career opportunity, the 25-year-old said: “I get to dance alongside my flatmate, what more could you want?

“But he’s delighted, he was wishing me well. He’s known for a little while as well but he’s had to keep it quiet as well.

“It should be fun sharing a stage with one of your best mates. So that’s an added bonus definitely.”

He added that he expects that things will get “a little bit competitive” between him and his Italian roommate once filming begins.

“We are really naturally quite competitive anyway, and he’s quite competitive in general but we just mess around.

“When it comes down to it, it’ll be a little bit competitive.
