Conor McGregor has paid a huge compliment to his fierce rival Nate Diaz.

The Dublin MMA fighter was tweeting about his recent defeat at UFC 264 against Dustin Poirier in July in their final trilogy match.

During the fight, McGregor broke his leg seconds before the end of round one.

Taking to Twitter, Conor said that Poirier “backed away” from his attacks and thinks that he has developed a more “ferocious version” of Nate’s ground game.

“I’m very pleased with my ground attacks from bottom, at present. I butchered dude from the bottom, use your eyes,” he said.

“He backed away from me! I’ve now developed a more ferocious version to Nate's ground game.”

“If Nate goes down, no one follows. They won’t follow me now either. Watch!” he added.

36-year-old Nate Diaz defeated McGregor in March 2016 before losing a rematch between them five months later.

In response to his comments one follower said: “People really don’t pay attention lol … how are you on your back an land more cleaner strikes then the one on top my guy Connor was putting work while on his back lets be real.”

To which Conor said: “In my last camp I’d a severely damaged left leg. Many of my sessions consisted of starting in open guard bottom. And staying there. Full rounds remaining on bottom. I was beating people up until they backed away from me. It then translated to the fight."

"True story," he added before tagging Netflix in the tweet.

Another tweeter hit back asking McGregor if he won the fight in the end.

“His head was sorer, my leg was sorer. I feel good on that. Not to say his leg wasn’t busted either tho. I had that thigh well minced. I feel it’s just simply not settled yet. Is the fairest response I can give,” he responded before going on to hint at a fourth match between the pair.

“Make no mistake they are not looking forward to what is coming. I will be back and it will be settled. Once and for all.”

McGregor continued responding to fans, with another querying if a damaged leg caused his injury during the match.

“Same leg, same spot. I attribute it to why I wasn’t in as much shock as Chris/Anderson where. I knew something may happen in advance. Chris was upset with my quote. Felt I was aiming at him. I was not. If any consolation to my reaction, It was because I’d a heads up it may snap,” he told them.

Meanwhile, the 33-year-old said he would gladly sponsor his younger self.

“I could sponsor him! He’d be highly thankful, as well as grateful, and work extremely hard to assist in my company's growth. It’s a tough business man!,” he said.

“In fact you know what! I’m gonna sponsor myself 12 million dollars right now this second! And push all the companies!”

During his late night tweeting-fest McGregor got chatting about his pub The Black Forge Inn, telling fans the best meal to order at the gastropub.

“I’d say the goat cheese bon bons to start. A taste bomb! Then our Irish steak on a stone for main. To drink then I’d have a Forged Stout and a Proper Twelve on the rocks. Dessert I’d go for The Black Forge Mess, with more Forged Stout and Proper Twelve to finish. What a place!”
