AFTER a series of lacklustre tracks took the shine off her high-flying global career in recent years, Katy Perry looks set for a major comeback in 2022.

And she kicked off this week, by releasing a duet, When I'm Gone, with superstar DJ Alesso.

The adrenaline-pumping new dance track marks the two iconic artists' first collaboration together. Their official music video for When I'm Gone, will be premiered on Monday, January 10.

Katy also launched PLAY, her first-ever Las Vegas residency, on Wednesday at Resorts World. PLAY will run to March 19 and will include exclusive New Year's Eve and New Year's Day performances.

The sensational singer, whose hits include I Kissed A Girl, California Gurls and Firework, reveals that her greatest joy these days is her role as a mum to daughter, Daisy, born in August last year.

"As a performer I've always relied on the love and acceptance and validation of the outside world and that ultimately can waver at times," Katy says.

"When you have a child, you have someone who looks at you and doesn't know anything on your resume, doesn't know anything about your bank account, doesn't know anything, doesn't care, and just loves you.

"Unconditional love. It's just everything I think I was looking for."

Katy, whose fiancé is the American actor Orlando Bloom, says that becoming a mum has made her more fulfilled and happy in her own skin. "I always felt like I was walking around with a little bit of pain in my heart concerning love," she says. "And my fiancé has done a great job at really helping to mend that.

"But this [motherhood] just went underneath all that and got so deep. It's just there, that love is there. I'd heard about unconditional love, but now I'm really experiencing it.

"There's a wholeness that has happened."

Perry also tells how she fell for Orlando Bloom after seeing him in action with his son, Flynn (10), from his former marriage to Australian model Miranda Kerr. "I was able to witness him and his fatherhood," Katy says.

"The way that he showed up for him [Flynn] and continues to show up for him, and the efforts that he makes and the distance he goes, I think that's one of the reasons I made that conscious decision.

"I was like, 'Here's the father of my future children.' I could see his kindness, empathy, care, and tenderness. I courted that. I was like, 'OK, this is different.' And this is his first girl, so it's a totally different feeling for him. I'm really, really grateful to have him."

Katy has a busy year ahead as she'll also be returning as a judge alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan on the next season of American Idol.

She reveals that she loves her role on the hit show and gets so emotionally involved in her role as a judge.

"We are so invested... honest to God, we are following our intuition," Katy says. "There is no script.''

Perry empathises with up and coming artists, having earned her own stripes the hard way.

At 17, she started travelling back and forth to Nashville to record an album of Christian rock, but then her record company went bankrupt and she moved to Los Angeles to start again.

Broke, she got a job talent scouting at a small record label. "That was the most depressing moment of my hustle," she recalls.

"I was sitting there listening to the worst music you've ever heard in your entire life."

Then Capitol records fished out an old demo of hers… and Perry got her break. " I knew I Kissed A Girl was going to have an impact. It was hooky for me. I couldn't stop singing it," she adds.
