Paul Mescal has devastated fans by deactivating his Instagram account.

The Kildare actor (25) amassed a large following on the platform of over 1.1 million fans but has recently quit the social media app.

Mescal, who rose to fame after appearing as Connell Waldron in the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s best-selling novel Normal People, still has his Twitter account which boasts over 179,100 followers although hasn’t been active since August last year.

A source told The Sun that “Paul deactivated his Instagram account because it just became a drain.”

“He felt like he was wasting time on there, reading the comments is no good for anyone’s mental health,” the insider continued.

“There are more important things going on in his life and he wants to focus his energy into his personal life and his work, he doesn’t need social media for that.

“He’s a private guy and doesn’t feel the need to share everything online. But Paul knows it does mean he won’t be able to cash in on lucrative offers for massive brand tie-ins.”

The source revealed that Mescal may “reactivate his page in the future” but is currently “enjoying” his much-needed social media detox.

This comes after American singer Phoebe Bridgers fueled rumours that she was dating the Normal People star in an interview with Style magazine.

When asked about the Irish actor, Grammy Award-nominated Phoebe replied, “Oh, he’s the sweetest – he’s the best,” but remained coy about whether she found him “hot” and declined to comment.

The pair first sparked rumours of a relationship last summer when they were spotted enjoying brunch at the Lemon Leaf Café in Kinsale.

Paul also starred in the music video for Phoebe’s song ‘Savior Complex,’ which was directed by Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

The video was released just days after Paul finally revealed that he has a girlfriend in an interview with GQ back in November.

During the interview, he described his girlfriend as a “lifesaver,” but refused to name the lucky lady.
