Imelda May has wished her boyfriend Niall McNamee a happy birthday while hailing him as her best friend.

The Liberties singer described fellow musician Niall as a total hero as she celebrated his birthday this week.

Posting a picture of the Dundalk man enjoying a tasty pint of Guinness, as they enjoyed a romantic dinner together, Imelda wrote: “Happy Birthday Niall!!!!

"You’re my best friend and total hero. Get in!!!!!”

Imelda first met Niall in London back in 2018, but the pair’s relationship turned romantic during the first coronavirus lockdown in 2020.

Introducing Niall as her boyfriend on social media she wished him happy birthday by writing: "Happy Birthday to my kind-hearted, hilarious, talented, witty, weird, charismatic, thoughtful, handsome as hell best friend and boyfriend. Love you!"

The Dubliner gave a rare insight into their romance during her appearance on Angela Scanlon’s Ask Me Anything in November.

She said: “It’s going really well so far, touch wood. I’m normally really private, I’ve had relationships that nobody has known about and they’ve come and gone.

“And I normally keep things quiet but this one seems to have taken wings, gotten out there so that’s ok. So far so good. I take things in the moment.

“He is a messer and he makes me laugh, he’s brilliant. And he makes me laugh a lot. We’re a good pair,” she added.

Imelda, who divorced from her ex-husband Darrel Higham in 2015, is 19 years older than Niall.

Speaking about their age-gap in an interview with the Sunday Independent last February, the 47-year-old said: “You can line things up as much as you want and follow the rules as much as you want.

“If two people fall in love, that’s all there is and to have beauty in your life in any way, especially now, is a blessing.”

Imelda and Niall also collaborated on one of the new tracks of her new album, 'Don't Let Me Stand On My Own', together.

She said: "He sang it drunkenly on the phone to me and he was changing it or throwing it out... I wouldn't let him get rid of it, I felt there was something good there.

"I think you either get on with someone or you don't."
