Conor McGregor has said he is “heartbroken” after his beloved pooch Hugo suddenly died.

The 33-year-old MMA superstar shared a series of poignant snaps of the animal that had accompanied him on his rise to fame with his 42.7 million followers on Instagram.

Taking to the social media site, the Dubliner wrote: “So heartbroken to say my dog Hugo has passed away.

“He was with me all the way, my closest companion. From sleeping on a bed frame without a mattress to everything else that came after.

“Thank you for all the work put in alongside me to get this life correct for our family. All the love and cuddles we will miss forever and ever our Hugo! Gutted. RIP the best boy, Hugo.”

Fans and friend commiserated with McGregor with footballer Robbie Keane declaring: “I know how you feel pal” alongside a broken heart emoji.

Aoife McGregor added simply: “Heartbroken.”

MMA fighter Dillon Danis wrote, “Sorry brother he will be missed.”

“Thoughts and prayers brother,” added another friend. “My dogs are my everything. They are one of the only reasons I’m still here today.”
