Adam Driver in House of Gucci prompted massive sales of Aran sweaters

LADY Gaga’s latest movie House of Gucci has prompted sales of Aran jumpers to soar by as much as 95 per cent. A photo of Gaga and Adam Driver on the set of the film, in which he’s wearing a cream Aran sweater in the Italian Alps, went viral earlier this year. Now movie watchers are emulating the style of the Oscar-nominated actor, who plays Maurizio Gucci in the movie. The Aran craft began in the 1890s when islanders off the west coast of Ireland were taught to knit in the style of the guernsey knotted jumper, and the first commercially available brands came out in the 1940s and 1950s. The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Macken made Arans popular in the 1960s. Paul Byrne of the Sweater Shop on Dublin’s Nassau Street admits that because of Driver wearing the jumper in House Of Gucci “it’s going from a low seller to a massive seller”. The jumper’s popularity was also boosted by Taylor Swift wearing one last year in promotional material for her album Folklore, while Chris Evans wore an Aran jumper in the 2019 film Knives Out. There are other brands and trends that have become hugely popular after exposure in films or TV shows.

TOP GUN – RAY-BAN AVIATORS
RAY-BANS have famously been used in several films such as Risky Business and The Blues Brothers, but it’s in Top Gun that Aviators oozed sex appeal.
Tom Cruise and his fighter pilot gang wore the iconic sunglasses in the 1986 movie and sales rose by 40 per cent in the seven months following the release of the flick.
“Top Gun was a recruiting video for the Navy. It really helped their recruiting. People saw the movie and said, ‘Wow! I want to be a pilot,” its producer, John Davis, recalled.
And he was right. Whatever about sales of Aviators taking a climb, the US Navy set up recruitment booths at cinemas showing the film and saw an increase of 500 per cent in young men who wanted to join up.

Paul Mescal became an overnight sex symbol thanks to his sizzling performance in the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s book.
While Paul and his co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones stripped off for their steamy love scenes, it was not only Connell’s necklace which caused a stir but his O’Neills sports shorts. No doubt Paul was able to find lots of them in his wardrobe as he used to play Gaelic football in his native Co Kildare, and even after the TV series ended he was spotted jogging in the Irish-made shorts.
Paul Towell, a director at O’Neills, revealed that they had a 20 per cent increase in sales of similar shorts — costing around €20 each — due to the ‘Paul Mescal Effect’ and that it “was one of the few bright spots in a very difficult year” for the sportswear brand.
GQ singled out the shorts as fashionable and Gucci brought out a piece similar to the shorts sported by the 25-year-old.

In much the same way the ‘Lady Di’ haircut became fashionable in the 1980s, the ‘Rachel’ style from Friends had women flocking to hair salons all over the world looking for the style.
Back in the 1990s Friends was one of the most popular shows on TV and Jennifer Aniston managed to transform a simple hairstyle into a global talking point.
Stylist Chris McMillan created the ‘Rachel” hairstyle, which was first worn by Aniston’s character Rachel Green in the April 1995 episode of Friends, The One With the Evil Orthodontist.
It had its roots as a shag cut, layered and highlighted to perfection, to stand out on TV.
The style was adopted by other actresses such as Meg Ryan and Tyra Banks, as well as stars like Kelly Clarkson and Jessica Alba, with salons confirming they were inundated with requests for the ‘Rachel’ style.

Jimmy Choos and Louboutins are famously fashionable among women who like to sport eye-catching shoes, and Manolo Blahniks joined them after being worn by the stars of Sex and the City.
Spanish designer Manolo Blahnik launched his line in 1971 and by the time Sex and the City came along in the 1990s his range had been worn by the likes of Princess Diana and Bianca Jagger.
When Carrie Bradshaw was regularly seen dashing down the street in his creations, 30,000 pairs of Manolos were being sold a year at the
American luxury department chain Neiman Marcus alone.
“When the business took off in the ’90s, I knew that we were doing something popular but I didn’t think about being famous. It never occurred to me that something like that could happen,” Blahnik said.

The original dress was created by Molly Goddard and cost over €400, and even at that price it soon sold out.
But high street brands such as Penneys/Primark and H&M answered the huge demand and came up with affordable replicas ranging from €16 to €22 a pop.
Jodie played sexy assassin Villanelle in the hit series.
When she came to Ireland last year to film The Last Duel opposite Matt Damon and Adam Driver she had little need for such a dress as the flick was set in medieval France, but perhaps one of the pink confections was tucked away in her wardrobe for a special moment offset.

CARS have played a huge role in the James Bond movies, but none more so than the classic Aston Martin.
Throughout the films, a range of luxury vehicles have been fitted with elaborate weapons and gadgets, but it’s the Aston Martin that’s most associated with 007.
The Aston Martin DB5 was introduced in Goldfinger, followed by several other models. The Aston Martin DBS V12 is in the 2006 film Casino Royale and the DBS Superleggera was seen driven by Lashana Lynch in the latest flick No Time To Die.
Car dealers confirm that not only do new Aston Martins increase in demand with the release of a Bond movie, but there is also a demand for used models.
The brand is quite pricey though, with the cheapest version The Vantage costing about €140,000.
