Best-selling author Roisin Meaney has revealed how she was called a “dirty slag” by a “young pup” as she was walking into town minding her own business.

The Limerick-based writer who is currently working on her 20th book, recalled the nasty incident in a Twitter post that garnered dozens of supportive messages.

“Walking into town earlier, three young pups, 12 at most, coming towards me acting the maggot,” she wrote.

“When the two in front reached me, one yanked my beanie off my head. I whirled and grabbed it back, and the third called me a dirty slag as he passed. Left a nasty feeling behind them.”

Furious fans took to the social media page to reply, with one person saying: "This is what we get for our new 'enlightened' approach to child rearing.”

“Yeah, that's it," another added, “we should definitely hit them more to teach them not to hurt people.”

One fan said: “Roisin, as a child of the 60s in Derry this made me think about the children around me playing ball and an adult passing by. The shout rang out ‘hold the ball until the lady passes’. You would have seen that all over Derry. Sad to hear what happened to you.”

“Ur tweet just reminded me that we did this in the 80’s as well,” one person replied to the comment. “Regularly stopped play to let people pass by.”

Another commented: “This book should be a mandatory read for anyone planning on having children,” alongside a picture of a book entitled, ‘How to raise kids who aren’t arseholes’.

On a more serious note one tweeter recalled: "That very thing happened to my son the night before his GCSE exams started. The guys were late teens pulled his beanie off ran into the park. He ran after them they jumped him broke his arm gave him severe beating. Told cops ringleaders name they said it was hearsay!”

To which Roisin replied: “God, that's horrible Joe. Hope he's over it now.”
