After Tina O'Brien and Ryan Thomas' split hit headlines we look back at other celeb break-ups

When love breaks down in Hollywood it's not a pretty sight

They say that breaking up is hard to do - but imagine what it's like when the break-up gets ugly under the full gaze of a curious public.

Just ask Ryan Thomas and Tina O'Brien, whose very public split continues to play out a decade later.

The Coronation Street stars - who played Jason Grimshaw and Sarah Platt in the hit soap - were together for six years before splitting in 2009. While the couple, who have a teenage daughter together, tried to keep the peace, their strained relationship blew up last week when it was claimed Sarah had damaged her ex's car. He's now reportedly looking for her to foot £1,000 worth of damage caused.

Many celebrities have had to suffer the downside of fame as their messy break-ups hit the public domain. Just ask Julia Roberts, who fled to Ireland when her relationship with Kiefer Sutherland ended very acrimoniously.

The couple were one of the most famous in the world - and planning a summer wedding - when they suffered a public break-up in 1991.

There were rumours he'd been having an affair with a dancer when Julia called the whole thing off just days before the nuptials. Instead, Julia was spotted with Kiefer's friend, actor Jason Patric, in Ireland, which caused a public scandal.

But they have since let bygones be bygones. "You fall in love, there's nothing you can do about that," Sutherland said last year. "She's an extraordinary person and he is too and timing is what it is and everybody moves on from that."

Paul McCartney and Heather Mills' marriage imploded via a bitter and protracted divorce case that was painful for all involved.

In the months leading up to the case, stories about both of them emerged in the press, including claims that Heather had lied about what she had endured during her marriage to the former Beatle. One judge in the case described her as: "A less than impressive witness".

Heather had petitioned for a settlement totalling over €100 million but in the end received cash and houses worth €31 million. Heather famously poured a jug of water over Macca's lawyer Fiona Shackleton when the settlement was announced.

Brad Pitt's marriage break-up with Jennifer Aniston had already been raked over years earlier - but that was eclipsed by the acrimonious ending of the couple known as Brangelina.

That their divorce got so messy and protracted is still of surprise to observers and it looks like the lawyers will be the biggest winners of all. The couple wed after a decade together but just two years later, in 2016, it was all over amid rumours of huge rows between the couple.

In the years since, the wrangling through the divorce courts has been ongoing and involved custody of their six children as well as shared property and assets. Five years and a million dollars each later, they are still trying to agree terms, with a shared French vineyard a particular bone of contention. Just three weeks ago, Brad filed a lawsuit claiming that Angelina had sold her stake in the property, where their wedding took place, without his knowledge.

Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren's marriage ended in scandal and recriminations when he was accused of cheating on her by several mistresses who came forward claiming his indiscretions.

Claims at the time that he crashed his car after she chased him out of the house with one of his own golf clubs have been denied by both of them.

Despite the many women who subsequently came forward, the couple have since become friends as they co-parent their kids. "We have Sam, and we have Charlie. And we love them so much that we are going to do whatever it takes to make that work," Woods said in an interview. "We communicate so much better now."

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's marriage ended in divorce after a decade together and who doesn't remember the photo of her celebrating the day the papers went through?

Tom filed for divorce in 2001 and the couple saw every detail scrutinised by the public but they still managed to keep many details private.

"I was young. I think I offered it up?" she said last year, when asked about the scrutiny she and Cruise faced. "Maybe I've gotten a bit more trepidatious, but I'm always trying to be as open as possible. I just prefer to live in the world that way."

Kidman, who has two adopted children with Cruise, is thought to have banked almost $150 million after proving their marriage lasted over a decade under US law.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have already been undergoing a messy divorce, but further details could well emerge in the forthcoming Disney+ series The Kardashians.

"It is really hard with Kanye," Kim says in a new trailer for the series, before it cuts to a scene where she tells Kourtney Kardashian: "He told me my career is over."

It's unclear how much detail, if any, will be revealed in the new series, but the couple's seperation was confirmed earlier this month after six years of marriage. She recently broke her silence after Kanye complained about daughter North's TikTok account on social media. "From the beginning, I have wanted nothing but a healthy and supportive co-parenting relationship because it is what is best for our children and it saddens me that Kanye continues to make it impossible every step of the way."

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard may have been married for just over a year, but their split emerged as one of the bitterest and most protracted in recent years.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard accused each other of being abusive

Heard filed for divorce, claiming he had assaulted her. Depp later sued a publication for claiming he was a wife beater, and Heard appeared as a witness, detailing several different instances of abuse.

Depp, too, claimed that Heard had been physically abusive towards him. Depp lost the case and actions between the two are ongoing.
