IT'S the slap that shocked the world of showbiz - Will Smith violently striking Chris Rock's face onstage in front of hundreds of millions watching the Oscars.

As everyone knows by now, Will took umbrage at Rock's crass joke about the actor's wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

Rock had taken aim at Pinkett Smith's shaved head, a result of the hair-loss condition alopecia.

"Jada, can't wait for G.I. Jane 2," the comedian laughed towards her.

Demi Moore starred in the Ridley Scott film G.I. Jane where she shaved her head for the part.

Smith initially seemed to laugh at the 'joke' but then he saw his wife's angry reaction, which included rolling her eyes upwards.

Smith then saw red and stormed to the stage and belted a startled Rock in the face.

The French Prince of Bel Air actor then continued his thuggish behaviour when he returned to his seat, shouting at Rock: ""Keep my wife's name out of your f**king mouth!"

Shortly afterwards, Smith picked up the first Oscar of his career for playing the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard.

The incident led to an investigation by the organisers of the Academy Awards, with calls for Smith to have his Oscar taken off him.

Smith later came out with a public apology, saying his behaviour was "unacceptable and inexcusable".

He added: "Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive."

Jada's first public nod to the furore was when she posted afterwards on Instagram: "This is a season for healing." But the Smith/Rock showdown is not the first violent confrontation among celebrities. Here's a few more….

Rapper Machine Gun Kelly was at the Barclays Centre in New York last September to perform his new song Papercuts at the VMAs with Travis Barker, while the Dubliner was presenting the Artist of the Year award to his good friend Justin Bieber.

While McGregor strutted along the red carpet with his fiancée Dee Devlin, Kelly was the centre of attention as he was arm in arm with his girlfriend Megan Fox.

It appears tempers heated up when McGregor was refused a photo opportunity with the singer and rapper by Kelly's team, which led him to allegedly swing his cane in Kelly's direction.

He was then shown throwing the contents of a beer canister in Kelly's direction and branded him a "little vanilla boy rapper".

Some claim the Dubliner mistook Kelly for rapper Jake Paul, with whom he's in a feud. The fighter has now apparently invited Kelly and his girlfriend Fox to his next bout in a bid to bury the hatchet.

Jeremy Clarkson became so annoyed about being the target of fellow TV presenter Piers Morgan that during a 2003 flight a minor incident between the pair occurred. The following year at the British Press Awards in London the row became physical.

Morgan claimed Clarkson punched him three times in the head and permanently scarred him because of a ring he was wearing. But the pair made a truce after a five-hour drinking session in a pub in 2014 and Morgan went on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, which is now hosted by Clarkson.

After the Met Gala in New York in 2014, a video emerged from a hotel elevator showing Solange Knowles beating up her brother-in-law Jay Z.

Jay and Solange were joined in the elevator by Solange's sister Beyoncé and the couple's bodyguard, who had to physically restrain Solange at multiple points during the lift ride. Numerous theories emerged as to why Solange lashed out, including that Jay Z had cheated on Beyoncé, but he subsequently tried to pour cold water over the incident.

In 2012 Orlando Bloom and Leonardo DiCaprio were having dinner in Ibiza when Justin Bieber approached their table. The pair told a clearly worse for wear Bieber to leave their table, with DiCaprio attempting to shoo him away with his hand.

An angry Bieber made a comment - apparently about Bloom's estranged wife Miranda Kerr - which upset him. Bloom jumped over a sofa and threw a punch at the singer before the fight was broken up.

Sinead had become famous with her cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2U and she jumped at the chance to visit his mansion when he invited her along.

She claims Prince suggested they have a pillow fight so that he could hit her with something hard that he had already filled in the pillowcase. Sinead alleges Prince punched her and all she could do was spit on him and protect herself from his blows.

The Dubliner maintains she escaped the house in the middle of the night after which he followed her and chased her around in a car on the road.

Boyzone star Shane Lynch got into a drunken brawl with US musician Sean 'Diddy' Combs following the MTV awards in Dublin in 1999.

"I was drunk," recalls Shane. "We were in the green room. His entourage said he wanted it for himself, and I wasn't having any of that." Shane claimed Diddy had been pointing a bottle of champagne at him and began pouring the drink towards him in an antagonising manner, which prompted him to throw a punch.
