Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reportedly turned down an offer by the United States to evacuate him from Kyiv amid the Russian invasion.

Instead, he asked for weapons to aid the ongoing fight.

“The fight is here. I need ammunition, not a ride,” the President stated, according to a senior American intelligence official as reported by PA.

During a video call with EU leaders on Thursday he feared his imminent death as he said: “This might be the last time you see me alive.”

In a video posted to Twitter on early Saturday morning, he confirmed he was still alive.

“Good morning everybody. Do not believe fake news. I am here.

“We will not lay down our weapons. We will defend our country.

"Our weapons are our strength. This is our land. Our country. Our children. We will protect all of them.”

In the video, Zelenskyy can be seen standing in front of the House with Chimaeras building opposite the President's office.

A chilling report on Friday revealed that teams of Chechen special forces "hunters" have been ordered into Ukraine to take out specific members of the government, including President Zelenskyy.

He said he had been told there were Russian special forces in Kyiv who were hunting him down, while his family is “the number two goal” for Putin's hit men.

Squads of assassins were given a deck of cards with individual Ukrainian officials' photos and descriptions on them, to assist in identifying their targets.

A Moscow Telegram channel with links to the security establishment has revealed the sinister development as Ukraine's president admitted he is “target number one” for the Russians.

Zelenskyy, a former TV comedian, insisted he had remained in Kyiv as he urged his fellow citizens to stay strong.

He said he was addressing his people from the capital, where he was seen dressed in an olive green t-shirt, and appeared to be speaking from a bunker.

He also said his family, wife Oleana, a 44-year-old architect and screenwriter, and their two children: daughter Aleksandra, 17, and son Kiril, nine also remained in the country.

“My family is not a traitor, but a citizen of Ukraine,” he said, adding that he would not reveal their location.

”According to our information, the enemy marked me as the number one target. My family is the number two goal.

“They want to destroy Ukraine politically by destroying the Head of State.”

President Zelensky expressed his anger at Western rulers after his country was left to face Russian troops alone and insisted he would stay until the bitter end.
