A teenager who had been in a coma for 62 days after a road accident suddenly 'woke up’ when he heard the words of his favourite dish ‘chicken fillet’.

The 18-year-old male, from Taiwan, endured six operations after he was involved in a crash while riding his scooter.

Doctors performed emergency surgery and were able to stabilise his condition, but he fell into a deeper coma.

Chiu, as he was referred to by his surname, went through a constant “tug of war with the god of death” with his family by his side, praying that he would wake up soon.

However, medics noticed his pulse had accelerated on the 62nd day of his coma when his elder brother joked, “Brother, I’m going to eat you your favourite chicken fillet.”

A nurse at the bedside told Taiwan News that he began to regain consciousness and his vital signs began to stabilise.

He eventually recovered from his ordeal and after he was discharged from the hospital, he returned with a cake to thank the medical team who he credited with his recovery.

One of the medics said they had taken an approach to bring the teen back to health, “one step at a time”, but attributed the young man's ultimate recovery to his strong will to survive.
