The sister of British student Meredith Kercher has spoken of her shock after her sister’s killer was released from prison early.

Rudy Guede (34), originally from the Ivory Coast, was convicted of murdering Meredith, who had been on in Italy on an exchange from Leeds University, in 2007 in the flat where she was living in Perugia, Italy.

Guede was freed earlier today, just a few months before his 16-year jail term was due to expire.

Meredith’s sister Stephanie (38), speaking to the Mirror, said Guede’s release came as “a shock obviously”.

“I always knew the day would be coming at some point, but for it to be early again is a bit of a surprise,” she added.

"It's not going to change anything for our family in the sense of Meredith.

“From what we’ve learned over the years, he has followed what he’s been requested to do. I just hope that he has taken those right steps, and the justice system is right in its decision.

“It’s not necessarily a decision I agree with, but as anyone in our situation would hope, a life sentence isn’t a life sentence.”

It has been reported Guede has told his lawyers he wants to be forgotten on his release.

To date, he has been the only person to be successfully convicted for the murder as both Amanda Knox (34) and her boyfriend at the time, Raffaele Sollicito, had their convictions overturned on appeal.

Guede was convicted of the murder of Meredith after his fingerprints were found at the scene.

He still denies murdering the student.

Amanda Knox now lives in Seattle, in her native USA, where she has a four-year-old daughter.

Speaking of the murder, Knox has said: “The controversy, not the truth, is what people care about more.”
