A 59-year-old man in Zelenograd, Russia, who had suffered breathing difficulties for over 50 years, was cured when doctors found a coin that he had stuck up his nose as a child and forgotten about.

Doctors at the Konchalovsky City Clinical Hospital in Zelenograd treated the man who had only complained when his condition deteriorated to the extent that had no choice but to seek help.

Doctors performed a CT scan that showed that the right nasal passage was completely blocked by a foreign body.

It was only after seeing the CT scan and the mysterious round object that the unnamed man recalled playing with a small, one-kopeck coin, and shoving it into his nose, when he was about six years old.

However, because he feared the wrath of his stern mother he had not told her about it and eventually forgot that it was there.

Doctors were sceptical about his story at first, but after removing the coin, during an endoscopic operation which lasted 1.5 hours, they found it had developed a ‘nasal stone’ that usually forms around foreign objects only after a significant period of time.

Doctors said that the man was lucky to regain full nasal breathing ability after having the coin stuck there all this time.
