A big-hearted punter who visited an Irish bar in the US lifted the spirits of staff with a whopping $966 (€855) tip and a message of support in challenging times.

The man, known only as “Mike” paid for his $33.21 (€29) bill for food and drink at Kildare’s Irish Pub in West Chester, Pennsylvania with a total of $1,000 (€885) for the service, leaving the rest for staff.

Kildare’s later shared a picture of the receipt on Facebook alongside a message of thanks to “Mike”.

The generous tipper wrote a note on the receipt to ensure it was no mistake by asking his server to “share” the tip “with your colleagues.”

And he also included the supportive message, written in large capital letters across the top of the receipt that read: "Hang in there — COVID won't last forever!!", adding a simple "Thank you."

General Manager Mark Tarzell said he and bartender Phillip Scanlon were working when “Mike” came in and "ordered a chicken cheesesteak and had a couple of beers."

He said the man only offered a few words of encouragement before quietly leaving.

The seven members of staff who worked that night, including the cooks, all shared the windfall while Kildare’s later posted a picture of the receipt and a thank you.

"Wanted to share this extremely kind gesture from one of our guests last night," the caption accompanying the post reads.

“Our staff were over the moon. Thank you so much! The generosity that we have encountered over these hard past few months really is overwhelming. Thank you to everyone."

Scanlon, who was working behind the bar that night, later told Fox 29 he was left “speechless”.

“He left an outrageous tip and wasn't just for me, but it was for everybody and with the darkness that's been going on it's nice to have some kind of light.”
