Conor McGregor’s arch-nemesis Khabib Nurmagomedov has signed a contract with Russian third-tier side FC Legion Dynamo.

The former UFC lightweight champion who retired undefeated at the end of 2020, is now set for a professional football career after retirement from the Octagon.

The ex-lightweight champion announced his retirement last year after beating American Justin Gathje in October of last year, fulfilling a promise he made to his mother following the tragic death of his father and trainer.

That was Khabib’s first fight since the passing of his father Abdulmanap following complications caused by Covid-19.

“Today, I want to say, this was my last fight,” Khabib said. “No way am I going to come here without my father.

“[My mother] doesn’t want me to fight without my father. I promised her that this will be my last fight. And if I give my word, I need to follow it.”

In January, he hinted that he was open to moving to football when he Tweeted: “Preparing for my football debut. I’m free agent, and ready to accept offers.”

Legion Dynamo then announced the signing on their Instagram account showing Khabib shaking the hand of a club official.

"A great battle awaits our Legion, for which we need great warriors. We are ready to welcome a Russian Premier League team together with Khabib Nurmagomedov," the club captioned the image with.

The Eagle is a self-confessed football obsessive and recently revealed it would be his childhood dream to play professionally.

He told Match TV : “To play football on a professional level is a childhood dream. Of course, I have such a wish. Football is the king of sports after all.

The Notorious has been staying in California to recover from the horror leg break he suffered in his trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier last month.

And reports from America claim he and Nurmagomedov were both dining at Catch restaurant in LA.

The former lightweight champions share one of the most heated rivalries in the history of the UFC which has bubbled under the surface since their clash in 2018.

Nurmagomedov choked out McGregor in the fourth round and the Irishman has struggled for momentum since.

He now faces up to a year on the sidelines after breaking his leg during his third fight with Poirier, which forced a doctor's stoppage at the end of the first round.
