An American congressman’s claim that “the Brits” did a great job in nation building in Northern Ireland has raised some eyebrows.

Rep Mike Green was a guest on Newsmax, a conservative American news and opinion website, during a debate about the chaotic scenes that followed the American withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The Tennessee representative was asked about “the longer term lessons that should be learned on this 20-year quagmire the United States got involved in” during the conversation which led to some interesting remarks.

“I think what we have to realise that as a country we are not very good at nation building,” Congressman Green said.

“We should focus on what we're good at and that's winning those short wars. We’re amazing at it. We concentrate firepower better than any nation in history and these long protracted struggles are just not, we’re not good at it.

“We need to get better at it, maybe, but we should not have been 20 years with 20 different strategies,” he added. “H R McMaster does a great job of pointing this out in his book, ‘Battlegrounds’. We basically had each year a brand new strategy in Afghanistan, that's no way to do it.”

A post including the clip of the interview has been shared widely on social media, with many Twitter users leaving somewhat exasperated comments.

One wrote: “I think the Irish people might have a differing opinion on this.”

Another added: “Even the British would have a problem with this. From the British perspective, Northern Ireland is part of their own nation. So the British are good at nation building their own nation? What an insult!”

One person has written: “Holy crap. How many Irish came to the US because of the wonderful nation-building they had experienced? I guess they came here just to spread the joy.”

One other person has posted: “Oh yeah we did brilliantly in er.. Kenya? No. India? No. Ireland? No. America? No. Egypt? No. The Caribbean? No.”

While another adds: “Sorry, what?! 1.3 billion Indians would like to debate that point.”
