An incident in which a petrol bomb was thrown through the window of a property in Ballymena is being treated as arson.

The PSNI said they received a report that a flat was on fire at around 12.15am in the Wakehurst Park area of the town.

It is understood the windows of the flat were smashed before the petrol bomb was thrown inside.

The flat was unoccupied at the time of the attack.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “This fire could have resulted in serious injuries, even loss of life and could easily have spread to the adjoining properties.

“We are treating this as arson with intent to endanger life and I am asking anyone with information, or who noticed any suspicious activity around that time, to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 26 of 06/07/21.
