The wife of a soldier killed in Afghanistan has said the situation in the country with the Taliban back in charge after two decades is “hard to comprehend."

Brenda Hale’s husband, Captain Mark Hale, was killed in 2009 after being fatally wounded in Sangin in Helmand province while trying to save one of his fellow soldiers.

Lance Bombardier Matthew Hatton had been caught in a roadside bomb when Captain Hale (42) and Rifleman Daniel Wild (19) were caught in a second blast while trying to save him.

Speaking to the BBC, Ms Hale said the US and Britain’s withdrawal from Afghanistan had left the people of the country in “the mouth of hell”.

She also spoke of how her husband and his colleagues believed in what they were doing, that they wanted to help bring democracy to the country and “help that country move forward."

Her comments came after the Taliban’s lightning fast and unopposed advances in Afghanistan since the withdrawal of US and British troops.

As a result of the withdrawal, she said the country is now a “dystopian playground for international terrorists to train” and that those terrorists are free to “hit the West at any time."

Speaking of the withdrawal, the former MLA said: “We have sent the devil in after them and that petrifies me for the people living in Afghanistan.”

There are currently around 20 Irish citizens still in Afghanistan with around 15 currently trying to leave.
