Two people have lost their lives and another is critically ill following a fatal road traffic collision near Ballycastle, County Antrim.

The man and woman who tragically died in the incident have been named as Owen Og McMullan (25), from Armoy, and Brigid Wilkinson (21), from Ballycastle.

The woman who has been seriously injured has been named as Siobhan McGowan and is currently understood to be fighting for her life in hospital.

The collision took place between a blue Honda and silver Ford. Both Brigid and Owen were pronounced dead at the scene.

Tributes have begun to pour in for those who lost their lives as well as thoughts and prayers for Ms McGowan.

Brian McMullan, Mr McMullan's uncle, posted: "This is a very sad day for both families and all their friends."

The incident happened on Friday afternoon in the Moyarget Road area.

The Northern Ireland air ambulance arrived at the scene and took one of the patients to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast while another was taken to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it received a report of the accident just before 5pm and dispatched three emergency crews, an ambulance officer and a paramedic to the scene.

Local councillor Padraig McShane said: "To the families and friends of the deceased, we as a community would offer our sincere sympathies.

“The focus of everyone's prayers is now with Siobhan McGowan who is in a critical condition in hospital."
