Three people have been treated for smoke inhalation after an arson attack in Coleraine in which a burning bin was placed against the doors of a property.

The incident happened in the Drumard Drive area of the town in the early hours of this morning.

Police received a report that a bin had been placed at the door of flats in the area before being set alight shortly after 4am.

The three occupants were safely evacuated by the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service at the scene after the police extinguished the fire on arrival.

“Enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding these incidents and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area at the time of the incident, should contact detectives on 101 and quote reference number 144 of 11/05/212," a PSNI spokesperson said.
