An RUC water cannon vehicle used in crowd dispersal and crowd control during the Troubles has been sold online.

The 1970 Foden military water cannon appeared on eBay and sold for £3,100 (€3,561).

The cannon was used by the Royal Ulster Constabulary and was one of a fleet of 12 which was used during riots during the conflict.

It has sat outside a museum in Humberside in England for the past 20 years and had previously been owned by military equipment specialists Allsop's of Bolton.

Jonathan Allsop of the company said: "We have had a lot of enquiries, a lot of people have come forward and told us about the engine.

"It has restoration potential and to be quite honest it should be restored."

He added: "It was an impulse purchase, I had never seen one before."

Water cannons were routinely used during the early days of the Troubles but were later ditched for a long period of time by the RUC.

They were re-introduced during the Drumcree protests in the year 2000 when protesters attacked police who were blocking the Garvaghy Road in Portadown, County Armagh, which Orangemen were attempting to walk down at the time.

The cannons were also used against rioters in the Ardoyne area of Belfast in recent years.

The 26-tonne truck is thought to be the last of its kind with Mr Allsop saying it would be perfect for a military enthusiast, even though it no longer runs.
