A man has been arrested by police investigating the sudden death of a woman yesterday in Portadown, County Armagh.

The woman's death was reported in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the Carrickdale area of the town.

The man, aged 50, has been taken to Musgrave Street police station for questioning.

The victim, who is understood to be in her late 20s, has been named locally as Kerrie King.

DUP MLA for Upper Bann, Jonathan Buckley, said said his "thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this time".

He added: "This is a tragic and shocking incident for the area and I would implore anyone who may have information to come forward to the police."

Upper Bann SDLP MLA, Dolores Kelly, said: "My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the woman who has tragically lost her life in the Tandragee Road area of Portadown. Police have arrested a man and I understand that they have established a line of enquiry.

"I want to put on record my thanks to the officers who are working with the family in these tragic circumstances."

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a woman in Portadown reported during the early hours of [Tuesday] morning.

“A post mortem examination will take place in due course to determine the cause of death.

“A 50-year-old man has been arrested as part of the investigation and has been taken to Musgrave Custody Suite.

“There are no further details at this time.”
