The PSNI have seized suspected drugs and illegal cigarettes with a street value of over £200,000 after a car was stopped in the Ormeau Road area of Belfast.

Patrol officers in the area arrested a 43-year-old man at the scene while follow-up searches were made at two residential properties in the south Belfast area and another in Tandragee.

During the searches on Thursday police uncovered suspected class B controlled drugs with a street value in excess of £200,000 as well as a sum of cash.

They also seized around 110,000 packets of illegal cigarettes.

The man arrested is currently in custody and being interviewed by detectives from the organised crime branch.

Chief Inspector Gavin Kirkpatrick said: "The seizure of the suspected drugs is further evidence of our commitment to removing dangerous drugs and harmful substances from our communities, thwarting the efforts of those criminals who are intent on profiting from the detrimental effects drug use causes in communities.

"The demand for drugs fuels the local criminal drug trade which causes irreparable damage and loss to many families. Particularly during the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic, as the majority of people are working hard to protect the NHS, drug dealers continue to show their disdain for everyone's safety by engaging in drug dealing, endangering lives and increasing pressures on our emergency services and front-line workers."

Meanwhile, in an unrelated search, detectives from the Paramilitary Crime Task Force investigating drug criminality linked to the INLA have charged a 29-year-old man with possession of a class B drug and possession of class B drug with intent to supply after suspected cannabis with an estimated street value of £28,000 was seized in west Belfast yesterday.

The man will appear at Belfast magistrates Court on March 12. The charges will be reviewed by the PPS.
