Crowbar attack Five arrested after driver assaulted in botched cash van raid in Belfast

The driver of the van was not injured, but police say he was left badly shaken following the incident.

The PSNI have arrested four men and a woman after botched robbery on Great Victoria Street in Belfast city centre this morning.

Shortly before 9am the police received a report that a cash in transit van driver had been assaulted by a man wielding a crowbar.

A box containing money was taken and police believe the attackers made off in a dark vehicle.

The driver of the van was not injured, but police say he was left badly shaken following the incident.

Shortly afterwards the PSNI arrested two men aged 41 and 44, two men aged 40 and a 52-year-old woman in the west Belfast area.

Two of the men were arrested after a collision on the Monagh Bypass, while another two of the men and the woman were arrested afterwards at a property on the Monagh Road.

Shortly afterwards the box containing the cash was recovered by police.

All five have been taken to Musgrave Street police station for questioning.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Detective Inspector Keith Wilson is appealing for anyone who witnessed the robbery or anyone who saw any suspicious persons or vehicles in the area of Great Victoria Street before or shortly after the robbery to contact detectives at Musgrave on the non emergency number 101 quoting reference number 25126/01/21.”
