Police investigating criminality linked to east Belfast UVF have seized suspected cocaine, cannabis and drug dealing paraphernalia as well as cash during a series of searches yesterday.

They also arrested a 24-year-old man on a number of drugs offences.

The searches were undertaken by officers from the Paramilitary Crime Task Force (PCTF), which was set up by the PSNI, HM Revenue and Customs and the National Crime Agency to tackle crime linked to paramilitaries in Northern Ireland.

A number of properties in the east Belfast area were searched during the operation.

Detective Inspector Hamilton said the operation was the latest in the PCTF’s proactive investigation into suspected drugs criminality linked to east Belfast UVF.

He added: “The seizure of Cannabis and Cocaine today exposes the hypocrisy of Drug criminals, who hide behind the badge of paramilitaries.

"On the one hand they sell drugs to vulnerable people to line their own pockets and on the other they are shooting and beating those they believe are involved in the supply of drugs leaving nothing but a trail of misery in their wake.

"We will continue to proactively and robustly pursue these drug criminals and bring them before the courts.

“We will listen to the community and act on information they provide, so I would encourage members of the public with information regarding drug dealing to call 101, or you can submit a report online using our non-emergency reporting form via http://www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/ .”
