A shocked community have vowed to rally around a woman on her eighties who was viciously robbed by a gang of masked men.

Callous burglars broke into the Co Antrim home of the frail pensioner and stole a substantial amount of money believed to be her life savings.

Around six men forced their way into the woman's home on Main Street in Armoy at around 10pm on Friday night.

Police said the woman woke up to find the men in her house.

The burglars drove off in a red car towards Carrowreagh Road leaving the terrified woman in a state of extreme distress.

Local Councillor Joan Baird from the UUP spoke of her horror after hearing the news.

“I and the whole community are absolutely astonished that this has happened in a village like Armoy, a quiet rural area where everyone knows everyone, and everyone looks out for their neighbours.

“I am in total shock, what happened was thugs, because that is what they are, targeted a vulnerable person and took her life savings. The have probably left her very insecure and that is tragic especially considering her age.

“The community will support her and I will be calling upon the police to being those thugs to justice because this is just not acceptable,” the alderman said last night.

And she called for anyone with any information to come forward immediately.

“Whoever did this need to take a long and hard look in the mirror. Big men breaking into a woman's house in her eighties, big men tackling an elderly lady, what does that make them? They targeted her. Anyone in the community who knows anything at all needs to go to the local police. The community and I have great sympathy and support for this lady,” she told Sunday World.

Anyone with information can contact police on 101.
