RIP Young man who died 'suddenly' on New Year's Day described as 'gentle giant'

Tributes are being paid to a young Galway man who died “suddenly” on New Year’s Day.

Niall Sammon, from the village of Ahascragh near Ballinasloe, passed away on Saturday.

His funeral will take place at 1pm on Tuesday, 4th January in St. Cuan’s Church, Ahascragh, followed by a private cremation.

He is survived by his parents Gerry and Breda and brothers Mark and John.

A notice on RIP.ie reads: “Sammon, Castlegar, Ahascragh, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, January 1st, 2022, Niall, (Suddenly), much loved son of Gerry and Breda and dearly loved brother of Mark and John.

“Sadly missed by his loving family, Mark’s partner Stephanie, uncles, aunts, cousins, work colleagues, neighbours and many friends.

“Reposing at his residence (H53 F252) on Monday evening from 3 o’clock until 8 o’clock. In adherence to current guidelines, this will be walk through only.

“Removal on Tuesday afternoon to St. Cuan’s Church, Ahascragh for Funeral Mass at 1 o’clock followed by a private cremation. Family flowers only please.

“I Líonta Dé go gCastar Sinn.”

Tributes have been pouring in online for Mr Sammon, including from local club Caltra GAA.

Speaking about the former underage captain in a statement, the club said: “It is with a great sense of sadness that we heard of the tragic passing of Niall Sammon, Castlegar, Ahascragh.

“Niall played football from an early age with Caltra and was a member of successful under-age League, Championship and Minor winning teams, captaining Caltra to a Minor B Championship in 2014.

“Caltra GAA Club offers its sincere sympathy to Niall’s parents Gerry and Breda and to Niall’s brothers Mark and John.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h'anam dílis.”

Eglish Primary School in Ahascragh also paid tribute to their former pupil, who they described as a “gentle soul.”

“Our deepest condolences to Breda, Gerry, Mark and John Sammon on the death of Niall. Niall is a past pupil of Eglish Primary School.

“He will be remembered fondly by all in our school community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sammon family at this sad time. May his gentle soul Rest In Peace.”
