RIP Young Kilkenny hurler Martin Burke (20) laid to rest after crash tragedy

Tragic young Kilkenny hurler Martin Burke was laid to rest today.

The 20-year-old, from Urlingford, was killed in a car crash that occurred on the R693 at Tobernapaiste, Freshford, Kilkenny in the early hours of Friday morning.

The keen sportsman was fatally injured and his body was transferred from the scene to St Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny, where a postmortem took place.

Martin’s wake was held at his family home in Chapelfield on Sunday evening from 4pm to 7pm.

Removal took place this morning to the Church of the Assumption in Urlingford, where family and loved ones arrived for Requiem Mass at 11am.

Martin was then buried at Johnstown Cemetery after the funeral mass.

He was a talented young hurler, and local GAA club Emeralds extended their “heartfelt condolences” to the Burke family.

In a statement, the club said: “It is with the deepest regret that the club informs you of the tragic passing of the late Martin Burke.

“We would like to send our heartfelt condolences to his parents, Deborah and Michael, his sister Emma, and all his relatives from the Burke, Ryan and Moriarty family who are so deeply connected with the club over many years.

“Martin was a dedicated player with the Emeralds and was a key member on all teams at underage from U-6s up to U-19.

“As a mark of respect to the family all club activities, training, matches, wallball opening and Bingo will be cancelled this weekend.”

Gardaí continue to appeal for witnesses to the collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R693 at Tobernapaiste, Freshford between 2.45am and 3am on Friday 5th November are asked to make this footage available to them.
