Cervical cancer campaign Vicky Phelan is to be granted the honorary Freedom of Limerick City.

The Freedom of Limerick is the highest civic honour that can be bestowed upon an individual by Limerick City and County Council.

The decision to award Vicky this accolade was reached at a special meeting of Limerick City and County Council after being nominated by Mayor Daniel Butler.

She will be honoured for her work in “uncovering the Cervical Check scandal and her tireless support of other women who have been affected and are fighting for justice.”

“Vicky is an inspiration. She has faced and continues to face her challenges head-on with a drive and a determination that has garnered the respect and admiration of all,” Mr Butler said of Ms Phelan.

“Her work encapsulates the ideals of the freedom of Limerick. She has empowered women to be able to speak their truth and ensure their health is treated with respect and attention it deserves.”

Ms Phelan said she was “absolutely honoured and delighted” to accept the Freedom of Limerick.

“I am a very proud blow-in from Kilkenny who has made her home in Limerick. I have always felt welcomed and accepted in Limerick, even before I became this public figure so I would be absolutely thrilled to accept the offer,” she said.

She added it was also an honour considering only four other women have received the Freedom of Limerick since 1877.

Past recipients of the Freedom of Limerick include President Michael D. Higgins, US presidents John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton, Pope John Paul II, and rugby legend Paul O’Connell.

The ceremony will take place in the New Year subject to Covid guidelines.
