Cervical Check campaigner Vicky Phelan said she had a ‘great day’ full of moments her children will remember following a recent and painful cancer update.

The mother of two recently revealed she will need to undergo radiation for a tumour on her spine.

Taking to Instagram, she revealed she’s been enjoying better days.

“Today was a 'great' day,” she began.

“Yesterday, I paid for my 2 hour lunch out with my friends. I was probably sitting up straight for too long (apologies in advance @fitzymm and @gildeaam ) My back was in bits for the rest of the evening… BUT I would not have changed a thing.”

“It was just soooo good to get out of the house yesterday and meet up with two great friends and catch up like normal people do and add more memories to the memory bank,” she said,

“Today, my back behaved because I minded myself and was well rested after a good night's sleep. And so, when Darragh came home from school today I was sitting in my spot in our living room ready to help him with his homework.”

“We spent ALL afternoon together in the living room getting homework done, practising his tin whistle which (thankfully) he is getting really good at and it no longer sounds like a banshee wailing anymore,” she joked.

“And then, when the homework and tin whistle practice was all out of the way, he snuggled in beside me and I got him hooked on Wordle, and, would you believe it...the little fecker is a bloody natural and was whooping my ass after a half hour”

“Before you @ me @john__wall__ and @gaby.kelly.397 I don't want to hear it!!! Ye all know how competitive I am.”

“Anyway, today was a GREAT day, For me, these are the times my children will remember...the time I spent sitting down with them being a Mammy helping out with homework but also getting down to their level and doing stuff they're interested in."

On Saturday, Vicky gave an update on her current “medical situation”.

“I had a consultation this morning with my radiation oncologist about having some radiotherapy on my spine to deal with an existing tumour that is now growing into my spine and causing me quite a lot of pain.”

"And so, after a long chat, I have decided that I am going to go ahead and have the radiotherapy.”,

Vicky said she is “just so relieved” that there is something that can be done to relieve her pain.

"I will be starting on my two week course of radiotherapy within the next two weeks.

“Unfortunately, this course of treatment will be coinciding with both my son's and my husband, Jim's birthdays which take place on February 26 and 24 respectively, but, I feel it will be worth the short term pain of being sick for two to three weeks for the long term gain of being in relatively little pain and being more mobile afterwards.”

“We might book a few days away when I am feeling better to celebrate properly,” she added.

Vicky also thanked her Instagram followers for their support over the recent weeks.

“Finally, I would just like to again take this opportunity to THANK ALL OF YOU my followers, the people of Limerick, Kilkenny, Ireland and further afield for your support.

“I honestly don't know what I would do without it. It has been like medicine for my soul. So THANK YOU ALL.”
